What is Hospice Care?
Hospice care focuses on comfort rather than cure when a patient has been diagnosed with a life-limiting illness and is no longer seeking curative treatment.
Hospice is not about giving up. It is about choosing comfort, peace, and quality of life.
Our goal is to:
✓ Manage pain and symptoms effectively
✓ Support emotional and spiritual well-being
✓ Provide guidance and education for families
✓ Honor each patient’s wishes and dignity
✓ Help individuals remain at home whenever possible
Who Is Hospice For?
Hospice care may be appropriate for individuals who are facing a life-limiting illness and want comfort-focused care. Our team works closely with physicians and families to determine eligibility and can help guide you through every step.
Common signs hospice may be appropriate
Hospice may be a fit when there are frequent hospitalizations, declining physical function, increased weakness, or when curative treatments are no longer helping.
Does hospice require a specific diagnosis?
Hospice eligibility is based on a physician’s assessment of a life expectancy of six months or less if the illness follows its normal course. We can help coordinate the evaluation and paperwork.
Can hospice be provided at home?
Yes. Hospice can be provided in a private home, assisted living facility, or nursing facility. We bring care to you to support comfort in a familiar environment.

Frequently Asked Questions
If you’re unsure where to start, these answers can help. We’re also here to talk with you anytime.
Does choosing hospice mean we are giving up?
No. Hospice is not about giving up. It is about shifting the focus from cure to comfort — prioritizing quality of life, dignity, and peace.
Is hospice only for the last few days of life?
No. Hospice is available when a physician determines a life expectancy of six months or less if the illness follows its normal course. Starting earlier can provide more comfort, support, and guidance for the whole family.
Can we keep our loved one’s doctor?
Yes. We coordinate closely with your physician and other providers to ensure the plan of care reflects your loved one’s needs and wishes.
How often will the hospice nurse visit?
Visit frequency depends on the patient’s needs. Typically, a nurse visits regularly and adjusts the schedule as conditions change. A nurse is also available 24/7 by phone and for urgent visits if needed.
Are medications and medical equipment covered?
Medications related to the hospice diagnosis, as well as necessary medical equipment (such as hospital beds, oxygen, or wheelchairs), are typically covered under the hospice benefit through Medicare, Medicaid, or private insurance.
What happens if symptoms worsen in the middle of the night?
Haven Hospice provides 24/7 on-call support. If symptoms change or urgent needs arise, you can call at any time. A nurse will provide guidance and, if necessary, come to the home.
Can family members still provide care?
Absolutely. Family involvement is encouraged. Our team supports and educates caregivers so they feel confident and prepared — but you are never alone in the process.
What support is available for family caregivers?
We provide education, coaching, and 24/7 on-call nurse availability. After a loss, bereavement support is available for up to 13 months.
What if my loved one lives longer than six months?
Hospice eligibility is based on a physician’s assessment. If a patient continues to meet eligibility criteria, services can continue beyond six months. If their condition stabilizes, they may be discharged and can re-elect hospice later if needed.
Can hospice care begin in the hospital?
Yes. Hospice can begin in the hospital, and then transition to the home or facility setting. Our team coordinates closely to ensure continuity of care.
Do we have to sign a DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) order?
A DNR is not required to begin hospice care, but hospice does focus on comfort rather than life-prolonging measures. Our team will discuss advance directives and help families make informed decisions that align with their wishes.
What support is available for family members after the loss?
Haven Hospice offers bereavement support for up to 13 months following a patient’s passing. This may include grief counseling, support calls, and helpful resources for navigating loss.
